Home Studio Part 1: Foundation/Vinyl

By Joseph "Stix" Davis - 3/9/20

Finally! We have a house! We’ve been at it for over two years, but at long last, it’s happened!

We have some rooms to paint and a wall to take down when it gets nice out, but it’s still winter here and my first project is building my home studio.

First up is the foundation of the drum area. I bought a 4’ x 50’ roll of ½ lb mass loaded vinyl. I attached it to the wall using 1” screws with plastic washers. I repurposed a few of the panels from my old vocal booth into semi walls for the “rear” of the drum area. I attached a board to connect the two panels, where I will hang a soundproof blanket. I know I’m not covering every single inch. There are little gaps here and there. I could get some sound sealant, but let’s be real here, I didn’t want to deal with that. The studio room has bedrooms on two sides, a garage on the third, and a sizable front yard with a street on the fourth. Any sound that does get out has a lot to get through before someone else can hear it. The vinyl, foam, and extra carpeting will reduce that sound even more.

It doesn’t look very pretty right now, but this is just the beginning.

Cheers!
